Sugar Cookie Recipe for Cutout and Decorating

Sugar Cookie Memories

I have memories of decorating sugar cookies that go back as far back as I can remember. When we were still small, Mom would cut out and bake all the cookies, and my 3 sisters, brother, and I would have so much fun decorating with colored icings, sprinkles, colored sugar, red hots, and whatever other edible decor we had. Now that we are all grown up, we each carry on the sugar cookie tradition in our own ways.

The Most Important Things When Making Sugar Cookies

The most important things to bring to a cookie decorating party are fun and creativity! No sticks in the mud allowed here! There is no wrong outcome…as long as the decorations are all edible…I am pretty sure they won’t taste as good if they were not happily made. (Although, I have never tried it that way, nor do I intend to decorate like the Grinch.) Besides, if food is supposed to fill bellies and bring smiles to faces, why can’t they bring a smile before they are ever tasted? I think this is why kids excel at this. Kids don’t worry about making things perfect. They just go for it!

The Sugar Cookie Challenge

I like to make some traditional candy canes, snowflakes, and gingerbread people…but check out these adorable cookies my sister and her family decorated! They made me laugh so hard, and I know I am not the only one! I challenge you to let your sugar cookie flag fly! Do it with joy in mind. Think what would make you smile!

Sugar Cookie Cut-Out Collection and Decor

Here is my current Christmas/winter cookie cut-out collection. I also have some cutout shapes (not pictured) for other occasions, but I am always/especially on the lookout for more vintage and unique cutters to add! I found the sweater/stocking set on clearance at a store. I got the copper ones at a small antique shop in Alabama. I have had the silver ones forever. There is so much room for creativity and customization! My decoration secret weapons are gel food coloring (for super vibrant icing) and rainbow sparkling sugar (for a magical touch).
